Abstract
This essay examines tabloids portrayal on the two chosen celebrities. My research question is as follows; How are Amy Winehouse and Kate Winslet portrayed by British tabloids, and what does this reveal about British values and expectations of celebrities? In order to answer this question, I firstly analyzed the relationship among the media, public, and celebrities. Then I examined they were portrayed in different British tabloids based on the language used. Finally,I conducted a survey to find out British values and expectations of celebrities. Various online news articles in British tabloids were used as the main sources for this investigation. They were obtained from three different websites: The Sun, Online Mirror, and Daily Star. In order to find out their portrayals in the papers, examined the language used in articles, kinds of events reported, main idea of articles, and writer’s attitude towards these two celebrities.
Throughout my research, tabloid portrayals on Amy Winehouse and Kate Winslet were found to be greatly differed. The former is portrayed in a critical and cynical way, while the latter is being highly praised in tabloid articles. I designed and conducted a online survey of 89 British people to find out their values and expectations of celebrities. Based on the result of the survey, portrayal of Kate Winslet seems to reflect British values and expectations. On the other hand, it seems behavior of Amy Winehouse is not viewed highly deviant by British people unlike her portrayal in tabloids. Tabloids create worse image of a celebrity than public expectation and encourages readers to have opinions they intended. Celebrities are stressed out by tabloids’ ridiculing statements and this might cause their mental illness and conduct of deviant behavior. Thus, tabloids’ negative portrayals damage not only a celebrity’s professional but also personal reputation…
